A new trick for the kitties!

My cute, cuddly, adorable demons from hell have learned a new trick this week. My kitchen has a very high vaulted ceiling, and hanging from that ceiling is the pendulum light fixture that my brother and I installed some time ago. Immediately above my kitchen cabinets, there is a ledge that is about 1 1/2 feet tall. I used to think it would be a nice place for some sort of decorative items, like colored glass bottles or vases, for instance. The key words here are “used to.” Now, I’m not so sure that would be a good idea.

A few days ago, I looked up at the ledge and saw a large piece of dust hanging from it. It made me wonder if somehow my little demons had found a way to get up there. A day or so after that, I had my answer. I was sitting at the computer in my room, when I heard a tiny meow. I went to the living room to investigate, but didn’t see either of the kittens. As I turned around to see if they had snuck past me and gone down the hall, I noticed movement out of the corner of my eye. Movement that was a lot higher off of the ground than it should have been. Harley was up on the ledge, and when she saw me looking at her, she started rubbing her face on the edge of the ledge as if to say, “Look at what I did! Aren’t I so cute?”

Apparently the diabolical little monsters figured out that if they jump from the counter to the top of the refrigerator, they can then jump up to the ledge. But did they stop there? NOOOOOO….

When I woke up early yesterday morning, I heard a sound that I could not identify coming from outside of my bedroom. It was kind of tinny, like someone was playing with something metal. I walked into the kitchen to find one kitten running out of the room, and the other perched on the edge of the ledge directly across from the pendulum light, which was swinging violently back and forth. I’m guessing that the cat on the floor tried to jump from the ledge to the light fixture…and judging from the sounds I heard, she might have actually caught the edge and hung there for a minute before giving up.

So apparently this is the party house, where we swing from the chandelier.
